The TK boy cross country team competed in the Division 2 MHSAA Regional at Portage Central. The weather was a cool and crisp 42 degrees with a few drops of rain but for cross country runners this is close to ideal. Nick Bushman went out strong in the race moving himself up with some of the strongest runners of the day in hopes of qualifying for the state finals next weekend. Nick would finish the day in 33rd place in a time of 17:38. Levi VanderHeide ran more aggressively today pacing himself second on the varsity group and running a season and personal best time of 18:23. Running third and fourth on the varsity team and continuing their season duel with each other were Camden Reynolds and Corbin Fleischmann, both pushing each other to personal best times on 18:26 and 18:28 respectively. Ashton Heiser had a strong performance on the rolling hills today finishing in a time of 18:48. Brennan Lutz returned to varsity form today running 18:55 for a season-best and did a great job of moving from group to group towards the end of the race. Senior Nathan Kinne ran his final cross country regional race today in a time of 19:20. Nate did a great job of staying aggressive through the race and pushing himself to catch as many runners as he could up to the finish line. The TK boys came into the meet ranked 11th and finished 9th.
In the junior varsity open race that followed, several TK runners wanted another chance to take on the challenging Portage Central course. As a coach, we love it when athletes want to keep going out there and challenging themselves. Sophomore Howie Frizzell ran a personal best 19:00, Matthew Smith 20:13, Michael Blair personal best 20:32, Eric Archer 20:33, Jackson LaJoye 20:58 (10 seconds off his personal best), Anthony Kinne 21:31(a 1:15 second improvement from his prior Portage race), and Ben Trudell 23:04 (a few seconds off his prior Portage race).
It is also a time to recognize how strong our OK Gold Conference rivals are and how they faired today. South Christian earned their trip to the team finals with a 3rd place Portage Regional finish, East Grand Rapids 2nd place Allendale Regional, GR Christian 3 place Allendale Regional, and just missing out on a trip to the team finals was Forest Hills Eastern 4th place Allendale Regional. That is 4, and almost 5 teams from our conference qualifying for the MHSAA Team State Finals. WOW! In the girl’s races, EGR, GR Christian, and Forest Hills Eastern also all qualified for the MHSAA Team State Finals.
