The long-awaited official start to the racing season began today for the TK Boys Cross Country team competing at the Coach B Invitational (formerly TK Invite) at the Yankee Springs Recreation Area Gun Lake State Park. What was a wet muddy course a few days prior miraculously had dried out to provide some fantastic performances for many youth harriers. The TK Trojans were scheduled to compete last week at the Kenowa Hills Invitational but that event was canceled due to excessive flooding.
This years TK Trojan cross country team has many new faces running on the top 7 scoring varsity with several others in the hunt. Junior Nick Bushman ran a very strong debut cross country race placing 6th overall and helping to break up the Caledonia dominance. Nick looked very confident and under control throughout the race earning a top 25 finishers medal in a time of 17:54. Joining Nick in earning top 25 honors was senior Ashton Heiser. Ashton, also making his cross country debut, ran a hard-fought 3.1 miles in 19:18 as he ran with a large pack of competitive South Christian and Caledonia runners right from the gun.
Returning to the varsity and running 3rd on the team was sophomore Levi VanderHeide with a time of 19:28. Levi ran a solid race with a strong finish coming down the final 600 meters. Finishing in positions 4, 5, and 6 today were freshman Camden Reynolds (19:49), freshman Corbin Fleischmann (19:52), and senior Nathan Kinne (19:59). It was fun to watch these three compete together today. They ran great early on as a group and I look forward to seeing them continue to work together over the season. Rounding out the top 7 was sophomore Howie Frizzell in a time of 20:45. Howie ran a very patient race today gaining confidence with each mile. As Howie gains experience on how to race this longer distance, I see significant time decreases. A few other TK Trojans who ran strong season debut races today and will be competing for top 7 positions were sophomore Kenny Bickford, freshman Matthew Smith, senior Gavin McCue, sophomore Cameron Gavette, and senior Remington Ludtke.
TK Trojans will open up OK Gold league competition on September 19th at the new South Christian High School / Athletic Complex. There, they will hope to close the gap on South Christian and put forth strong performances against other OK Gold harriers.
