It was a quick turnaround for the Trojan Girls Cross Country Team, after only two days prior having given it their all at the Regional meet, but they still went in and took the crown at the Barry County Cross Country Championships, at Maple Valley High School.
âI was a little bit concerned about the girls having a meet so soon after they just ran their hearts out at Regionals. However, even though they worked hard today, they didnât have to go to the well,â noted Coach Sam Wilkinson.
It was the final meet of the season for many of the runners, as only the top seven on the team run in Saturdayâs State finals, that will take place this Saturday, at the Michigan International Speedway.
âOne nice thing about this meet,â Coach Wilkinson noted, âis that it gives the runners who are outside the top seven a chance to compete one last time.â
The course was flat and fast, and many of the girls ran personal bests.
âIt was fun to see the fast times, and I was particularly excited for Haven DiPiazza (24:20) who was running in her first race after having been injured all year. It was also great seeing Gracie DeWent (22:51) get a personal best because her efforts allowed her to earn her varsity letter,â Wilkinson added.
Maranda Donahue (20:35) from Delton-Kellogg took top honors, followed by her teammate Heaven Watson (20:42). The next three spots went to TK, consisting of Sarah Possett (20:44), Audrey Meyering (20:44), and Rachael Gorton (20:44). Allison Collins (20:46) of Hastings broke up the pack slightly for sixth, but she was followed closely behind by two more TK runners, Elizabeth Meyering (20:49), and Alli Matison (20:52). Hannah Johnson (21:07) of Hastings managed to wedge herself in the mix, with Lauren Lutz (21:26) of TK, Sydney Pattok (21:41) of Hastings, and Bree Bonnema (21:42-pr) of TK rounding out the medal slots.
Additional finishers for TK were Shylin Robirds (21:58), Stephanie Pitsch (22:43), Allexus Barnes (23:09), Gema Diaz-Martinez (23:33), Tess Scheidel (23:38-pr), Madison Hannapel (23:42-pr), Maddisen Robirds (23:45), Jaclyn Westlake (23:58), Katie Miller (23:49-pr), Alex Perkins-Craven (24:50-pr), Kristina Cuison (24:56-pr), Sydney Coffman (25:04-pr), Amber Macomber (25:51-pr), Kate Vandermolen (26:23-pr), and Clara Classen (27:28-pr).
